1. Figurative Language- definitions and examples. See and print this link:
(not needed for the lesson, but for your own interest)
2. Worksheet to identify Similes and Metaphors- come pick up
3. Listened to Katy Perry song "Firework" on you tube and on the worksheet (see link, or come pick up the handout) highlighted all the similes we could find.
4. Listened to Jewel's song "You Were Meant for Me" and on the worksheet, highlighted any metaphors we could find. (very difficult)
5. Read Jewel's poem "Lost" and discussed how she made the metaphors. (She picked 6 meaningful words that were related, made a simile out of each one, then changed the similes to metaphors by taking out the word "like" or "as". Then, she expanded on the thought to make it more meaningful and poetic.
6. Did an example metaphor poem, modeled after "Lost"
7. Assignment: Write your own metaphor poem, modeled after "Lost"- must have 6 meaningful, related words, with which you make extended metaphors.

Original poem modeled after Who is Singing this Song- did an example, then must do one on your own. See Rubric below for marking: “Who is Singing this Song?” Original poem /2 followed model format /3 length- at least 18 lines (6 of them are: “Who is singing this song?” And “I am”) The rest are 3 stanzas x 4 lines each-or more. /2 conventions /12 content /6 creativity (mood, voice, word choice, figures of speech, meaning, enjambment, etc) Total /25
